Wine and California are pretty much synonymous, and Carlsbad’s Witch Creek is one of the area’s leading producers. Founded in 1993, local oenophiles have been raving about the fine vintages they produce for several years now, and tastings are the best way to get acquainted with their products. Their lovely tasting room, located just a block from the beach in downtown Carlsbad, is an inviting place to relax and sip from some of the more unusual varietals the winery produces, which include tasty Nebbiolos, Agliancos, and Montepulcianos. Specializing mostly in reds, Witch Creek’s award-winning wines possess a lot of body and impress even serious wine snobs. Tasting fees are quite reasonable, at only five dollars for a flight. Regular visitors can join the Cellar Club, which offers discounts and more.

If you’re looking for one of the most idyllic experiences you’ll ever have in your life, take a stroll through the Flower Fields. From humble origins—a ranunculus and freesia farm founded by Frank Frazee in the 1920s—this fantastic open-air botanical masterpiece has evolved into an amazing tourist destination that draws visitors from all over the world. Frazee’s green thumb expanded the farm to a staggering number of acres, and it wasn’t long before people were coming to gawk at the rows of brightly-colored flowers stretching off to the horizon. In 1993, the fields were opened to visitors and now for a reasonable admission fee you can walk the rows, take a hayride, get lost in a gigantic sweet pea maze, and more. Make sure to bring your camera, as the views of the fields in bloom are truly breathtaking. And, of course, you can purchase some cut flowers or bulbs to take home if you like.

Danish toy manufacturer LEGO has become an essential part of childhood with their little plastic bricks. And now you can experience LEGO on a grand scale at one of several Legoland theme parks all over the world. Carlsbad’s Legoland is 128 acres of fun for kids ages 2 through 12, with 50 rides and a wide variety of hands-on activities. Opened in 1999, the park is split into nine sections, including a water park. Some of the most popular attractions are the Fun Town driving schools, where kids can drive electric LEGO cars on a closed course, miniature dioramas of historic locations in the United States, and the “Splash Battle” in Pirate Shores. The grounds are immaculately kept and the sheer amount of stuff to do will satisfy any Legomaniac. Some complain that admission prices are too high ($63 for adults, $53 children), but you can’t do any of this stuff anywhere else.

The city of Carlsbad, California, has a lot to recommend it. One of the most unique features is the Carlsbad Lagoons, three inland bodies of water that measure more than a thousand acres in total and include hiking trails, nature preserves, and water sports areas. Here’s a little bit about each lagoon. The Buena Vista Lagoon lies on the boundary of Carlsbad and Oceanside and boasts 350 acres of fresh water, set aside in 1969 as California’s first ecological preserve. Located on the Pacific Flyway, it’s an excellent spot for observing the twice-yearly bird migrations that pass through the area. The Agua Hedionda Lagoon is three inter-connected bodies of water that run beneath the I-5 freeway and is zoned for active use, including sailing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding. Finally, the Batiquitos Lagoon is the best for nature-lovers, offering a 1.3 mile hiking trail that offers views of the game sanctuary and bird estuary.
